Fluoride is a mineral that occurs naturally in all water sources, including oceans. Research shows that fluoride can prevent cavities in children and adults by making teeth more resistant to acid that attacks and causes cavities.
There are two ways teeth can be exposed to fluoride:
1) Systemic –swallowing fluoride, which is the most common source from drinking water
2) Topical Fluoride –directly applied to the teeth as toothpaste or rinses. Professional applications are available in gel or varnish forms from your dentist.

Tooth decay often occurs on the chewing surfaces of back teeth. These surfaces have pits and grooves that trap plaque, bacteria and bits of food. These areas are hard to keep clean because bristles cannot reach them and starts decay forming a cavity.
Our hygienists are able to help prevent cavities with SEALANTS which are a plastic material that is applied to a chewing surface of the back tooth. The material flows into the pits and grooves acting as a barrier, “sealing out” the plaque, food and bacteria.
